LifeWay Bookstore Reopens After Remodel

LifeWay Bookstore on Northern California Campus Reopens after Extensive Remodel

One of the highlights of the fall 2008 semester was the reopening of the newly remodeled LifeWay bookstore on the Golden Gate Seminary Northern California Campus.

The 2,200 sq. ft. store was totally gutted before adding new carpets, new fixtures, a new ceiling and more useable space. The wood slat wall treatment on columns, standalone shelving and some walls gives a warm, rich look which emphasizes the academic environment. The interior is accented by the warm sconce lighting fixtures.

“The remodel is a gift to the Seminary from LifeWay,” President Jeff Iorg told the crowd of Walker Downs, President Iorg, Glenn Prescott and Darren Draegerstudents, faculty and staff, prior to cutting the ribbon on the new bookstore. Joining him at the reopening celebration on September 4 was Walker Downs, LifeWay Campus Regional Director, Glenn Prescott, Director of Missions for Golden Hills Baptist Association and Darren Draeger, bookstore manager.

“The last time this store was remodeled was in 1980, and even then it wasn’t a total renovation,” recalled Draeger. The bookstore was first built in 1959, and opened the same year as the Seminary campus in Mill Valley, California. There is a LifeWay store in each of the six Southern Baptist seminaries. Draeger noted that over the past 10 years LifeWay has renovated five stores.

The store has more useable space now, even without expanding the square footage. The new standalone shelving is taller, and takes up less floor space than the old shelving. This allows more books to be displayed.

Jane Kelly and Diane Newman“We’ve increased our inventory of academic core books,” said Draeger. “The titles in this area are essential to a seminary environment and include complete commentary sets as well as books on preaching.” He noted that the most popular items are curriculum, studies by Beth Moore and books by well-known author/speaker and Golden Gate alum Henry Blackaby.

“We’re excited to have this opportunity, through the expanded selection of merchandise, to serve the Seminary community as well as the larger Christian community,” said Walker Downs, LifeWay Campus Regional Director.

The store employs three students who work part-time in addition to Draeger, who pointed Po-Wei Chenout that Northern California customers receive next-day delivery. “We have a higher than average volume of sales to churches,” Draeger said, “Since this bookstore services all the churches in the area – all of Northern California and Nevada.”
