Theological Field Education (TFE)

Theological Field Education (TFE) is a required field education program in which students participate in ministry under the supervision of mentors and in the context of a peer reflection group.

All master degrees and diplomas require two semesters of TFE, except for the MTS which requires one semester.

Important: Students must enroll in TFE through the TFE office, not through the Registrar’s office.  Students at Regional Campuses, see below.

What is TFE?

Theological Field Education shapes Christian leaders through ministry practicums that are based upon a “360-degree feedback” team. Our objective is to have every student develop the core competencies needed for ministry, grow in their understanding of self, and increase in spiritual vitality.

TFE students create a personalized Covenant of Learning, which specifies the objectives and goals of their TFE ministry experience. The Covenant of Learning integrates leadership character qualities and ministry skills.

For Master of Divinity, Master of Educational Leadership, MMiss, MAIM, and diploma students:
  • Two semesters (fall and subsequent spring) of TFE are required.
  • Class meets on the same day and time both semesters.
  • Ministry practicum must be 38 consecutive weeks (September – May)
