Discouragement is the Opportunity to Believe God Again

Discouragement is the Opportunity to Believe God Again
Pastor Keith Evans Speaks at Golden Gate Seminary
September 18, 2008

“A lot of people, even those in ministry, are discouraged at one time or another,” said Dr. Keith Evans. He was addressing students, faculty and staff of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary as the second speaker of four in the “Leading Pastors of the West” chapel series.

Evans has served since 1995 at Greater Gresham Baptist Church in Gresham, Oregon. He was the campus ministry leader at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore. He has a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Oklahoma State University, and a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Golden Gate Seminary. He is president of the Northwest Baptist Convention.

Evans used the story of David and Goliath, to illustrate how the young shepherd overcame the discouragement of the Israelites to win the battle for the Lord.

“Discouragement is like facing a giant,” Evans said. “We become discouraged when circumstances don’t go the way we expect; when we have relational, financial or health struggles; or sometimes people’s words or criticism cause discouragement.”
The Israelites were discouraged, but David walked in with a totally different perspective – and everything changed.

David defeated the giant with the weapons of God.

“One person who believes can change the perspective of an army. One person used by God can overthrow a giant. The battle belongs to the Lord.”

“Discouragement is the opportunity to believe God again,” concluded Evans as he reminded his listeners that God can use each and every one of them. “Today God is reminding you that the battle belongs to Him. Remember your heavenly Father, and trust Him again.”

The “Leading Pastors of the West” chapel series continues through the fall semester with Dr. Kevin White of First Baptist Church in Longview, Washington scheduled for October 2, and Dr. Steve Davidson of Clovis Hills Community Church in Clovis, California speaking on November 13.
